Courageous or Stupid?

cabbage soup for the, um, soul?

I’m on a silly diet.  It’s called the cabbage soup diet, perhaps you’ve heard of it?  Regardless, I refuse to link any of the information to this site.  If you find it yourself and browse through the recipes and restrictions do yourself a favor and stay out of the messageboard.  I wandered in accidentally and felt like I’d found a portal to the 8th grade girls locker room of my nightmares. Anyway, after a few months of weddings and goodbye parties I need to reset my dietary intake and reduce my cravings for sweets.  To be fair, I also like diets: the structure, the no-brain food decisions.  Today I can eat the soup, any fruit except banannas, take my multivitamins and drink water.  I also insist on taking my regular dose of fish oil.  Um, cabbage soup and fish oil, this could be a horrible idea! 🙂

A Goodbye Blogroll

My good buddy, Sarah Humpal, left for Grad School in Chicago last week.  ::sniffs::

I’ve kept a folder on my desktop for a few months and every time I come across anything to do with Chicago and food I drag it to the folder.  I asked my older sister, also named Sarah, who lived in Chicago for several years to add to my list.  Well, Sarah H. is officially gone so it’s time to empty out the folder, this act feels bittersweet but my mood is elevated by the fact that I get to do one of my favorite things – offer guidance and advice on a subject I know nearly nothing about!

My sister and her husband highly recommend this family of Italian restaurants. I recommed the carry-out option because you are a big time Grad student now and Red Baron freezer pizza might not be the same without Southern hummidity or the ennui of a full time job.

This place is all over various food blogs touting a great steak and an even better chimichurri.

Humpal! We never got to go out for Korean food!! Oh well, eat a kimchee omlette and think of me.

My sister Sarah LOVES this noodle shop. She took me there once when I visited her and it was really great!

This place gets lots of press for their burritos! I like the sound of this place, note the third comment – Dumpy Joint Great Burritos.

Sarah H. knows all about Hot Doug’s, I’m just linking this as my own personal shortcut.  Also, when I am in Chicago I am so going here!

This place looks awesome! Sadly, Humpal is not a big fan of sweets. 😦

Alinea! I need to make our reservations for next year!  I’ve loved many blog entries about this place. Here, herehere, and the upcoming Alinea cookbook!

Well, that empties the folder. Good news: I’ve increased my desktop capacity.  Bad news: I still really miss my friend.

Picnic to D.C.

Cafe Car on the way to D.C. to see Aaron’s family. I love traveling by train. For $6.00 we purchased the GoPicnic snack box. Organic ingredients, allergy sensitive selections and a little red checkered napkin for effect.  Aaron and I abstain from fast food on the principle that it is mass produced for over comsumption.  Also, I don’t like to eat from boxes but we made an exception for this picnic box and gleefully riped through the contents like a 5 year old with a Hapy Meal. Fun times.

Cinnamon pita chips, a jar of no sugar added blackberry jam, lavash, soy nut butter, baby food mango applesause, an ounce of Swiss cheese and an EmergenC. Not bad for $6.00 and two hours of snacking food.

I also enjoyed seeing. . .

Two beautiful items at the USDA farmer’s market, these apples were impressive and a welcome sight after ascending from the Smithsonian Metro stop.

A **glaring** ginseng culture at the Museum of Natural History.  This was located in the Korean culture exhibit. 30 square feet of inspiring Korean carpentry and folk art. I only wish the exhibit were larger.

I took this picture for my Mom!

My kindred soldiers who are busy bickering in the Hirshhorne sculpture garden for all eternity. LOVE THEM!

NEXT UP: Watching Anna throw pizza!
